Mastering Three-Point Studio Lighting for Premium Brand Commercials
Published by West Point Creative Team • March 15, 2024

In high-end film and commercial video production, lighting is the ultimate factor separating homemade videos from professional brand masterpieces. When we set up a studio commercial for our South African brand partners, our top concern is establishing professional contrast, separation, and mood.
The Key Light: Your Foundation
The key light acts as the primary source of illumination. Placed roughly 45 degrees to the side of our talent and slightly raised above their eye level, the key light establishes structural shadows across the facial planes, defining deep cinematographic characteristics.
The Fill Light: Controlling Contrast
To prevent harsh shadows from turning the commercial into a dark thriller, we employ a softer fill light on the opposite side of the face. Our fill light is usually highly diffused and operates at about 25-50% intensity compared to our key source.
The Backlight (Rim): Separation
Without a backlight, your subject will seamlessly blend into dark backgrounds. Placing a concentrated light source behind the subject allows us to create a gorgeous halo of rim lighting, providing deep perspective and a crisp 3D appearance.
"A meticulously placed backlight adds immediate professional polish to your interviews and corporate films."
By experimenting with different softboxes, LED light grids, and color balancing techniques, we consistently produce visuals tailored to make each South African business look trustworthy and sophisticated.
